Half-century from Dinesh Mongia before bowlers attack helped to India hard-fought 22-run victory over England, despite a brilliant century from Marcus Trescothick and take a 1-0 lead in a tense game of the first ODI.

Match Stats : 
  • India's 22-run win was their third smallest victory by terms of runs against England in One-day internationals.
  • India's 281 was their second highest score against England in One-day international and the second highest team total at Eden Gardens in ODIs, The highest was Sri Lanka's 309 against Pakistan in 1997.
  • England's 259 was their seventh highest score against India in One-day internationals.
  • England lost their last six wickets for just 35-runs - which was their joint third worst last six-wicket collapse against India in One-day international. They went from 224 for 4 to 259 for all out.
  • Marcus Trescothick became the eighth England batsman to score a hundred against India in One-day internationals.

India scored 281-8 in 50 overs with top scorer by Dinesh Mongia struck 71 off 75-balls including 7-fours & a six.

Sourav Ganguly cracked a 42 off 58-balls including 4-fours & a six, Sachin Tendulkar scored 36 off 43-balls included 6-fours.

Hemang Badani hit 35 off 33-balls including 3-fours, Virender Sehwag scored 29 off 37-balls included 5-fours, VVS Laxman 25 and Harbhajan Singh 18 not out.

England best bowler by Andrew Flintoff took 2-wickets, Ashley Giles, Darren Gough, Matthew Hoggard and Jeremy Snape each took one-wickets.

England scored 259 for all-out in 44 overs with top scorer by Marcus Trescothick 121 - which was his 2nd ODI hundred and his first century against India in ODIs.

Nasser Hossain scored 25 off 29-balls including 4-fours, Andrew Flintoff 24, Paul Collingwood 21 and Ashley Giles 18.

India best bowler by Ajit Agarkar picked up 3-wickets, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble both took 2-wickets and one for Sourav Ganguly - Harbhajan Singh.

Marcus Trescothick named Player of the match for his brilliant batting performance to scored a 121-runs knocked off facing 109-balls including 13-fours and 2-sixes with strike rate of 111.01.
