A magnificent closing over from strike bowler Craig McDermott led Australia to a tense six-run victory over South Africa in the one-day cricket international at Gaddafi Stadium.
McDermott yorked tail-enders Dave Richardson and Craig Matthews to defy a South African side destined for victory by the efforts of vice-captain Hansie Cronje.
Cronje remained undefeated on 98 as South Africa finished at 8-201 in reply to Australia's 6-207.
South Africa needed 14 from the final over but Cronje was off strike for the first ball and, aside from one boundary. was powerless to force the victory or score a well-deserved century.
The vice-captain was the dominant South African batsman against Australia earlier this year and continued his fine form today. hitting seven boundaries and one six from the 130 balls he faced.
McDermott bowled superbly for a return of 3-32 from 10 overs while Damien Fleming bagged 2-29 from his full quota of overs.
Australia's 6-207 was built around half-centuries from Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor, who made matching scores of 56.
The Australians made the perfect start to their defence of 207 when South Africa fell to 2-15 in the 10th over. courtesy of Fleming.
Fleming continued his dream week in international cricket by dismissing Gary Kirsten and Kepler Wessels in a superb opening spell of 7-3-10-2.
The 24-year-old., who bagged a hat-trick at Rawalpindi on Sunday in his Test debut. combined with McDermott to stifle the start of the South African innings.
At one stage. no runs were scored for 22 consecutive deliveries and Cronje was left with too much leeway to make up at the end of the innings.
Cronje and Jonty Rhodes added 76 in an hour for the fourth wicket before Steve Waugh trapped Rhodes lbw for 42.
Cronje then carried on with the job by himself. cruising past 50 from 82 balls. Apart from Rhodes. not one of his other team-mates scored more than 20 as the Free State batsman played a lone hand Before lunch. Australia had to rely on a half-century from Steve Waugh to post a reasonable total of 6-207 from its 50 overs.
Waugh cracked 56 from 73 balls but the Australians would have hoped for a total closer to 250 after an excellent start from openers Mark Taylor and Michael Slater.
Taylor (56) and Slater (44) added 98 for the first wicket in virtually even time before the innings lost its way, forfeiting 3-9 to fall to 3-107.
Taylor and Slater both fell to stumpings while the wickets of David Boon and Michael Bevan were sacrificed to needless run-outs. Waugh struck five fours in all and shared an important sixth-wicket stand of 42 from as many balls with Ian Healy, who contributed 18 not out.
Taylor and Slater progressed at a steady clip of four an over as the South African pacemen found no help at all in the track.
The 50 stand arrived in exactly an hour as Taylor, rather than the usually aggressive Slater, took the lead role with the scoring.
The left-hander's half-century came in 61 balls, arriving when the Australian captain guided Eric Simons to third man for a single.
South African skipper Kepler Wessels could envisage a total around the 270-mark when Australia was 0-98 but his decision to pair Shaw with Hansie Cronje paid an excellent dividend.
Both Slater and Taylor were stumped within 15 minutes.
