Match Report:
Sri Lanka scraped a thrilling two-run win despite a world record fifth-wicket partnership of 223 by India's Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja in the first of three one-day internationals at the R.Premadasa stadium.
Azharuddin hit 111 not out and Jadeja 119 as India, set a victory target of 303 off 50 overs, finished on 300 for seven.
India began badly, losing their first four wickets for 64 runs in the first 11 overs. But after a 35-minute break for rain, steady batting by Azharuddin and Jadeja kept India's chances alive.
Jadeja's 119 came off 121 balls, his second one-day century, before hitting back a full toss from Chaminda Vaas with India needing 16 from 10 balls.
Azharuddin kept India's hopes alive despite losing Nayan Mongia and Rajesh Chauhan within the space of three balls, but was left need- ing to score five off the last delivery bowled by Sanath Jayasuriya and could manage only two.
Azharuddin's unbeaten 111 came off 117 balls. The partnership between Azharuddin and Jadeja beat the previous best of 159 for the fifth wicket by Australians Ricky Ponting and Michael Bevan against Sri Lanka at Melbourne in 1995-96.
Earlier opener Marvan Atapattu scored his maiden one-day century to guide Sri Lanka to a formidable 302 for four after India won the toss and put the home side in.
Atapattu was run out in the final over for 118 scored off 153 balls with seven fours, reaching his first century in his 27th match after scoring seven half-centuries.
He shared in an opening partnership of 91 off 14 overs with Sanath Jayasuriya who thumped a quick 73 off 52 balls.
India opened the bowling with off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan in an attempt to curb the big hitting Jayasuriya, but the bowler was hit for 64 runs off his 10 overs. Jayasuriya hit two sixes and 10 fours.
Roshan Mahanama, promoted to number three, helped Atapattu add a further 108 for the second wicket with his share being 53 off 58 balls with one six and three fours.
With Aravinda de Silva chipping in with 34 at a run a ball, Sri Lanka maintained a run rate around six an over.

Sourav Ganguly blasted a 31 off 26-balls including 4-fours with strike rate of 119.23 and Sachin Tendulkar struck 27 off 28-balls contained 3-fours.
Sri Lanka best bowler by Chaminda Vaas picked up 3-wickets for 63-runs in 10-overs and Sanath Jayasuriya took one-wicket.
