India vs Pakistan 3-Match ODI Series in 1978

India tour of Pakistan 3-match one-day international series of the 3rd and final ODI match played between India vs Pakistan at Sahiwal 03rd November 1988 - Pakistan awarded the match (India conceded)


Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi called Indian team batsmen off the field at Sahiwal on 03rd November and conceded the third one-day international to Pakistan in protest at persistent short-pitched bowling.

Bishan Singh Bedi summoned the batsman in the 38th over of the Indians 40 overs, when India needed 23-runs to win, Bedi move gave Pakistan 22-runs victory and winning the 3-match one-day series with 2-1, which was the Pakistan's first bilateral ODI series win against India.

India were 183 for two wickets and eight wickets in hand, chasing the target of Pakistan's 205-7.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss decided to batting first, their opener started well, Majid Khan and Azmat Rana built the 38-run stand for opening wicket partnership and 28-run for second stand with Zahher Abbas.

Azrat Rana (20) bowled out by Mahinder Amarnath and Zahher Abbas was caught by Karsan Ghavri off Srinivas Venkataraghavan.

At 66-2, Majid Khan established valuable 37-runs off 55-balls, before Majid Khan bowled by Srinivas Venkataraghavan, then Javid Miandad (7) leg before wicket by Mahinder Amarnath.

At this stage Pakistan were 111 for four wickets, then scoreboard strong position moved by Asif Iqbal and Hasan Jamil, Iqbal and Jamil established the valuable 56-run stand for fifth wicket partnership before Hasan Jamil (26) bowled by Kapil Dev.

Asif Iqbal scored a magnificent 62-runs helped to Pakistan managed the 205-7 in their allotted 40-overs match.

India bowler Srinivas Venkataraghavan took 2-34, Mahinder Amarnath 2-35, Kapil Dev 2-49 and Karsan Ghavri took 1 wicket.

While India chasing 206 to win from 40-overs, Indian opener Chetan Chouhan and Anshuman Gaekwad good start for India, they added 44-run for opening wicket partnership, before Chetan Chouhan (23) behind caught out by Wasim Bari off Hasan Jamil.

After Chouhan exit, Anshuman Gaekwad and Surinder Amarnath well facing against strong bowling attack Pakistan pacer, Anshuman Gaekwad was completed his half century, then Surinder Amarnath completed his delightful fifty.

Anshuman Gaekwad and Surinder Amarnath contributed the 119-run stand for second wicket partnership, before Surinder Amarnath (62) caught Imran Khan off Asif Iqbal.

when India needed 43 run to win, Then Gundappa Viswanath comes to the batting at No.3 and Anshuman Gaekwad and Gundappa Viswanath added unbeaten 20-run stand when India required 23-runs from 14-balls.

at this time Pakistan medium-pace bowler Sarfaraz Nawaz, returning for a his second spell for Pakistan.

Sarfraz Nawaz bowled two bouncers well outside the batsmen's reach, He conceded four runs in his next over and followed in the 38th over by delivered four consecutive bouncers that all out of reach of the above the batsman's heads.

And not called wide by the umpire. although Anshuman Gaekwad touched Sarfaraz Nawaz's bouncer delivery for a single.

Almost India can easily won the match but Sarfaraz Nawaz tactics to India captain Bishan Bedi leads walk-off the match.

Asif Iqbal earned the player of the match for his important 62 off 72 deliveries.



India vs Pakistan 1st ODI at Quetta - 01st October 1978


Between India vs Pakistan first ever one-day international match played at Quetta in 1978 - India won by 4 runs, which was India's first (ODI) one-day international match win against Pakistan.

Indian team scored 170/7 in their allotted 40-overs with top scorer by Mahinder Amarnath (51), Surinder Amarnath (37), Dilip Vengsarkar (34).

Pakistan best bowler by Sarfraz Nawaz took 3-34 and Hasan Jamil 2-29.

Pakistan scored 166/8 in 40-overs - with top scorer by Majid Khan (50),  Zaheer Abbas (26) and Mohsin Khan (17).

India best bowler by Mahinder Amarnath picked up 2-38, Bishan Singh Bedi 2-44, debutant Kapil Dev and Surinder Ghavri each took one wicket, both playing his first one-day international match.

Mahinder Amarnath named player of the match for his all-round performance of scoring 51 off 61 deliveries including five 4s and took 38 for two wickets.


India vs Pakistan 2nd at Sialkot - 13th October 1978


Pakistan won by 8 wickets (with 139 balls remaining). Which was Pakistan's first one-day international match win against India

India all-out for 79 in 34.2 overs, which was India's first lowest total in one-day cricket history, India's top scorer by Mahinder Amarnath (34), debutant Yashpal Sharma (11), who was playing his first one-day match and India's nine batsman scored single digit runs.

Pakistan best bowlers by Hasan Jamil took 3-18, Saleem Altaf and Sikander Bakht each took two wickets.


Pakistan chased 83/2 in 16.5 with top scorer by Zaheer Abbas (48) and debutant Azmat Rana (22), who playing his first ODI match.

India best bowler by Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev each took one wicket.

Hasan Jamil named Player of the match for his brilliant bowling spell of 3 wickets for 18-runs with two maidens in his eight overs.
