Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin guided India resounding innings and 132-run victory over Australia and take a 1-0 lead in a one-sided game of the first Test match.

  • India's 132-run win was their third largest victory by terms of innings and runs against Australia in Test matches.
  • Australia's 177 was their joint fifth lowest score in a first innings against India in Test matches and It is their joint second worst-total in a 1st innings in Indian soil in Tests after their 174 at Kolkata in 1964.
  • Ravindra Jadeja's 5 for 47 was his seventh best bowling performance for India in Test matches and his second best bowling figures against Australia in Tests after his 6 for 63 at Bengaluru in 2017.

* Captain Rohit Sharma's unbeaten half-century leads to India strong reply after Ravindra Jadeja marked his return from injury with a five-for as Australia collapse for 177 on the opening day of the first Test match.

* Rohit Sharma's magnificent century, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel's steady fifties as India take a 144-run first innings lead, despite a Todd Murphy's debut five-for in the day two of the first Test match.

* Ravichandran Ashwin's five-for, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja's each two wickets helped to India resounding innings win against Australia under three days.


[Ravindra Jadeja has been penalised 25% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for breaching Article 2.20 of International Cricket Counsil's code of conduct for players during the first Test against Australia. The clause relates to displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.


The incident in question took place in the 46th over of day one of the Test, when Australia's first innings was on. Ravindra Jadeja was seen applying a pain-relief (cream) ointment - on the index finger of his bowling hand. Images from the broadcast showed Ravindra Jadeja taking a substance off Mohammed Siraj's hand and using it - but He not putting it on the ball.

The Indian team management later said that the pain-relief ointment (cream) was for swelling on Ravindra Jadeja's finger, but the same hadn't been communicated to the on-field umpires.

The match referee, Andy Pycroft, was satisfied with Ravindra Jadeja's explanation that the pain-relief ointment (cream) had been used only for medical purposes and not used to alter the condition of the ball. He, however, charged Ravindra Jadeja for breaching the spirit of the game under the ICC code.]



Australia 1st Innings scored 177 for all-out in 63.5 overs with top scorer by Marnus Labuschagne struck 49 off 123-balls - who fell one-run short of his half-century - including 8-fours.

Steve Smith scored 37 off 107-balls including 7-fours, Alex Carey cracked a 36 off 33-balls included 7-fours and Peter Handscomb hit 31 off 84-balls including 4-fours.

1st Innings India best bowler by Ravindra Jadeja claimed a 5-wicket haul for 47-runs in 22-overs including eight maidens, Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 3-wickets and one for Mohammed Shami - Mohammed Siraj.

India 1st Innings scored 400 for all-out in 139.3 overs with top scorer by Rohit Sharma cracked a 120 off 212-balls - which was his 9th Test hundred & his first century against Australia in Tests - including 15-fours & 2-sixes.

Axar Patel blasted a 84 off 174-balls including 10-fours & a six, Ravindra Jadeja cracked a 70 off 185-balls including 9-fours.

Mohammed Shami blasted a 37 off 47-balls including 3-sixes & 2-fours with strike rate of 78.72, Ravichandran Ashwin hit 23 off 62-balls included 2-fours & a six and KL Rahul scored 20 off 71-balls including a boundary.

1st Innings Australia best bowler by Debutant Todd Murphy - who took 7-wickets for 124-runs in 47-overs including 12 maidens on his debut Test match, Pat Cummins took 2-wickets and one Nathan Lyon.

Australia 2nd Innings scored 91 for all-out in 32.3 overs with top scorer by Steve Smith scored a unbeaten 25 off 51-balls including 2-fours & a six.

Marnus Labuschagne scored 17 off 28-balls including 3-fours, David Warner and Alex Carey each scored 10-runs.

2nd Innings India best bowler by Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a 5-wickets for 37-runs in 12-overs including three maidens, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja both took 2-wickets and one for Axar Patel.

Ravindra Jadeja named Player of the match for his all-round performance to took seven wickets and contribute with bat 70-runs in an match.
