* England, which opened their Group A campaign by trouncing New Zealand by 106 runs at The Oval here on Thursday, beat Sri Lanka by 47 runs at Taunton. 

* England's David Gower hit a superb 130 with a blend of grace and full-blooded aggression, was the inspiration of a score of 9/333 in their 60 overs. 

* Sri Lanka batted spiritedly but was undermined initially by fast bowler Graham Dilleye who took 4/45, and later by Vic Marks' off-spinner which brought him 5/39.

* The Sri Lankans were dismissed for 286, with Guy de Alwis hitting 58 not out to follow an unbeaten half century in Thursday's defeat by Pakistan at Swansea. 


England scored 333-9 in 60 overs with top scorer by David Gower hammered a 130 off 120-balls - which was his 6th ODI hundred, his first century against Sri Lanka in ODIs and also his first world cup hundred.

Allan Lamb blasted a 53 off 51-balls including 4-fours & a six with strike rate of 103.92, Ian Gould scored 35 off 40-balls included two boundaries.

Chris Tavaré hit 32 off 61-balls including 4-fours, Graham Dilley blasted a 29 off 16-balls included 5-fours with strike rate of 181.25 and Graeme Flower scored 22 off consuming 59-balls including a boundary.

Sri Lanka best bowler by Ashantha de Mel, Rumesh Ratnayake both took 2-wickets and one for Vinothen John - Arjuna Ranatunga.

Sri Lanka scored 286 for all-out in 58 overs with top scorer by Guy de Alwis cracked a unbeaten 58 off 51-balls including 6-fours & a six with strike rate of 113.72

Duleep Mendis hit 56 off 64-balls including 5-fours & a six, Arjuna Ranatunga struck 34 off 45-balls included 4-fours.

Sidath Wettimuny scored 33 off consuming 66-balls including 3-fours & a six, Somachandra De Silva scored 28 off 37-balls included 2-fours, Ashantha de Mel hit 27 off 26-balls including two boundaries and Rumesh Ratnayake 15.

England best bowler by Vic Marks claimed a career-best 5-wicket haul for 39-runs in 12-overs including three maidens, Graham Dilley claimed a career-best 4-wickets for 45-runs in 11-overs and Paul Allott took one-wicket.

David Gower named Player of the match for his record-equal batting performance to smashed magnificent a 130-runs knocked off facing 120-balls including 12-fours and 5-sixes with strike rate of 108.33.
