A captain Innings of 68 by Javed Miandad, Middle-order batsmen Saleem Malik and Manzoor Elahi's blitz steered Pakistan to a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand and clinch the title in the third match of a three-match series.


* New Zealand sent into bat and set Pakistan target of 215, raced to victory scoring 217 for six with eight balls to spare in the final match of the competition.

* They were declared winners because of higher run rate than New Zealand and hosts Sri Lanka after each side had won and lost a match.

* Javed Miandad captain in the absence of Imran Khan who has a leg muscle strain, played impeccably after Openers Mudassar Nazar and Mohsin Khan had both departed with only 42 runs on the board.

* Javed Miandad hit five fours and when he went, bowled by paceman Martin Snedden, Pakistan were 173 for five and within sight of victory.

* All-rounder Manzoor Elahi slammed two sixes off Martin Snedden in the 39th over before being
caught by Martin Crowe at backward square leg for 27 off the New Zealander's next over to leave Pakistan 206 for six.


New Zealand scored 214-8 in 42 overs with top scorer by Martin Crowe cracked a 75 off 85-balls including 6-fours.

Jeff Crowe scored 42 off 48-balls including 3-fours, John Wright hit 42 off 78-balls included 5-fours and John Bracewell 15 not out.

Pakistan best bowler by Mohsin Kamal claimed a 4-wickets for 47-runs in 8-overs, Wasim Akram took 2-wickets for 19-runs in 9-overs including two maidens with economy rate of 2.11 and Tauseef Ahmed took one-wicket.

Pakistan chased 217-6 in 40.4 overs with top scorer by Javed Miandad struck 68 off 81-balls including 5-fours.

Saleem Malik blasted a 32 off 25-balls including 4-fours, Manzoor Elahi hammered a 27 off 15-balls included 2-sixes & a four with strike-rate of 180.

Ramiz Raja scored 25 off 47-balls including a boundary, Mudassar Nazar 19 and Mohsin Khan 16.

New Zealand best bowler by Martin Snedden took 2-wickets and one for Ewen Chatfield - Evan Gray.

Martin Crowe named Player of the match for his brilliant batting performance to scored a 75 off 85-balls including six boundaries.
