Gutsy opening batsman David Boon thrilled his home state crowd by scoring an unbeaten century which enabled Australia to crush India by eight wickets in their World Series Cup clash at Bellerive Oval.

The Tasmanian belted 102 runs off 163 balls, including eight fours, in a superb innings which took 185 minutes.

Australia made 2-176 off 48.3 overs in reply to India's 8-175 from their allotted 50 overs, The homeside's convincing win erased their bitter memories from Sunday when India humiliated the Australians in Perth by 107 runs.

But the day belonged to Boon, who posted his third century in a limited overs international and the first for an Australian in a one-day game at Bellerive Oval.

After the game, Boon admitted he "had the shakes" when he made his century, "It's very enjoyable to hit 100 in front of your home crowd," Boon said. "I wanted to be positive today, and tried to play straight."

Boon was well supported by Dean Jones who made 48 runs before being caught by Sachin Tendulkar in the 48th over when Australia's score was 1-174 and only two runs short of victory.

Jones was going for two to bring up his 50 and hit the winning runs for Australia, The Victorian played a responsible one-day innings in a knock which included 25 singles and two boundaries, and allowed Boon much of the strike so the Tasmanian could reach his hundred.

The Boon-Jones partnership yielded 125 runs after the pair came together with the score at 1-45 after the dismissal of opener Geoff Marsh, who failed again, scoring only eight runs off 34 balls.

The Indians' performance was disappointing, and captain Mahammad Azharuddin admitted after the match that his side were at least 40 runs short of their target.
India won the toss and elected to bat hoping to repeat their recent success against the Australians at the WACA, but the tourists were soon confronted with a bouncy wicket and a tight bowling attack spearheaded by Craig McDermott and Bruce Reid.

"I was very happy with everyone's performance today," Australian skipper Allan Border said.
"We upped the tempo a bit. The guys were pretty determined, and we are back on track."

Azharuddin said his team did not make enough runs to have a realistic chance. "We didn't get a very good start. We struggled a bit and didn't get enough runs on the board," he said.

India lost its first wicket at two when Ravi Shastri was lbw to McDer- mott without scoring, After 10 overs, the visitors had only managed to put 15 runs on the board.

The situation was grimmer after 25 overs when they were 2-64, Realising that quick action was needed, Sanjay Manjrekar and Sachin Tendulkar picked up the run rate, eventually compiling a 102-run partnership in 99 minutes to take the score to 120 after 39 overs.

Without any addition to the total, Manjrekar was dismissed for 57, and a short time later Tendulkar exited for the same score.

Azharuddin promoted Kapil Dev in the batting order to score quick runs, but the all-rounder was caught-and-bowled by Peter Taylor for three when the Indian total was 137.

The visitors lost their last three wickets for 38 runs and finished at 8-175, with Azharuddin unbeaten on 21, McDermott was the most successful Australian bowler, capturing 3-19 off 10 overs, while Reid was as economical as ever taking 1-24 off 10.
