India and the West Indies tied the first World Series Cup cricket match at the WACA in Perth, with each side all out for 126 in a see-sawing and lacklustre performance.
India's batsmen again struggled to dominate an opposition bowling attack and refused to challenge the West Indians in a tedious and sluggish batting display that ended in misery after 47.4 overs.
Man of the match Curtly Ambrose led the assault for the West Indies with 2-9 off 8.4 overs, gaining considerable lift off the wicket. He went on to take a hand in the batting as the second-highest scorer including a vital six off Kapil Dev. He was run out for 17 in a mix-up with Patrick Patterson.
After early wickets, the Indian cause became one of merely lasting the overs. They failed, and also were unable to push the run rate above 2.5 an over despite a spirited 20 by Praveen Amre near the finish.
The dreary Indian performance was epitomised by opener Ravi Shastri, who occupied the crease for 123 minutes, received 113 deliveries, yet produced just 33 runs.
Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin said on Thursday his touring party would at all times concentrate on keeping a batsman at the wicket to provide stability to the team's run pursuit.
By the time Azharuddin came to lead the Indian crusade, the total had crawled to 3-41 from 20 overs.
Azharuddin tried to increase the rate of singles but the Indian skipper made just six runs in a 24-ball innings.
The West Indians were all out for 126 in 41 overs and their batting performance was not much better, with Desmond Haynes out for a duck and none of the batsmen getting a start.
With nine out for 126 in the 41st over it seemed that the West Indies could not lose, with just one run to make. But part-time bowler medium pacer Sachin Tendulkar gained the last wicket after Anderson Cummins snicked the ball to Azharuddin, who took a diving catch to draw the match.
