Ian Botham made all the difference during second World Cup match, England versus India in a day-night match in Perth, which England won by nine runs.
After top-order batsman Robin Smith had helped England's score along to 236, Botham assisted in the middle overs to restrict the opposition to 227, earning himself the man-of-the-match award.
India kept in touch with the run rate required for victory in the first 25 overs as opener Kris Srikkanth opted to follow a similar strategy to Smith.
Srikkanth wielded his bat without caution to amass 39 runs off just 50 deliveries and steer India to 2-100 after 25 overs.
But captain Graham Gooch, desperate to control the opposition scoring rate, introduced the destructive Botham into the attack and the great all-rounder produced the desired results.
After failing in his promotion to the opening batting position with just nine runs, Botham claimed the wickets of dangerous teenager Sachin Tendulkar (35) and newcomer Vinod Kambli.
Former Indian captain Ravi Shastri attempted to keep his team on track with a patient 57 runs but he rapidly ran out of support.
The quick wickets and the restrictive bowling quickly resulted in India's necessary run rate growing to seven runs per over and the lower-order batsmen never settled into the task.
Tailenders Subroto Banerjee and Javagal Srinath provided the WACA Ground crowd with excitement in the final two overs with 23 runs needed for victory.
Banerjee hit Derek Pringle for six with seven balls to go to reduce the deficit to nine runs but Botham ran out Srinath with five balls remaining in the innings.
