Day 1
* The Test match in Guwahati, the newest venue in Test cricket, may have disrupted traditional session breaks, but it also brought a sense of normalcy to the format amid the chaos in Kolkata and Perth.

The pitch demanded watchfulness during the first hour, eased as the moisture dried, and then offered occasional turn throughout a day that saw 247 runs scored for the loss of six wickets.

India’s bowling quality and depth stood out on the flat surface, forcing series leaders South Africa to take risks to maintain a scoring rate above three runs per over. India capitalized on these risks, taking wickets when the batsmen went after the bowlers.

Despite a new captain Rishabh Pant, India lost the toss for the seventh time in their last eight Tests. However, Kuldeep Yadav proved to be the ideal bowler for such typical Indian conditions, claiming three wickets. Jasprit Bumrah complemented him with his consistent control, finishing with figures of 17-6-38-1.
