India's unorthodox gamble in promoting brilliant all-rounder Kapil Dev to opener became stuck in the mud in possibly the shortest one-day cricket match in history.

Dev partnered Krish Srikkanth at the top of the Indian innings in the rain-marred World Cup clash against Sri Lanka here. but didn't face a ball in a match that lasted three minutes-two balls.

India and Sri Lanka came away from the game, officially abandoned in the first over, with the legacy of a single point, which could make or break both sides' campaigns. Sri Lanka has three points from three games; India has one from two games.

After a nervous wait when heavy overnight rain became regular daylight showers, play finally began, the overs reduced to 20 a side.

After two deliveries by Sri Lanka's Champaka Ramanayake, the heavens reopened.

The wicket was saturated and the umpires cancelled the match. The Indians fly to Brisbane tomorrow for a training session at the Gabba. Sri Lanka will go to Wellington to play South Africa.
