  • This is the fourth time England have whitewashed their oppositions in a bilateral three-match series in One-day international and registered their historic first 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in ODIs.
  • This is the third time New Zealand have suffered a clean sweep in a bilateral three-match series in One-day internationals.

England scored 255-7 in the allotted 40 overs - match reduced from 50 to 40-overs per a side - with top scorer by Robin Smith hammered a 85 off 71-balls including 13-fours with strike rate of 119.71.

Ian Botham blasted a 79 off 73-balls, Allan Lamb hammered a 25 off 16-balls included 2-sixes & 2-fours with strike rate of 156.25.

Graham Gooch hit a unbeaten 22 off 13-balls including 2-fours with strike rate of 169.23 and Graeme Hick scored 18 off 29-balls included a boundary.

New Zealand best bowler by Chris Cairns, Willie Watson both captured 2-wickets, Gavin Larsen, Murphy Su'a and Rod Latham each took one-wickets.

New Zealand scored 184-8 in the allotted 40 overs with top scorer by Ken Rutherford cracked a 37 off 49-balls including 2-fours.

Chris Harris struck 37 off 62-balls including 3-fours, John Wright hit 36 off 44-balls included three-fours & a six and Ian Smith hammered a 27 off 16-balls contained 3-fours & a six with strike rate of 168.75.

England best bowler by Derek Pringle captured 2-wickets for 11-runs in 6-overs including two maidens with economy rate of 1.83, Chris Lewis, Dermot Reeve, Ian Botham, Richard Illingworth and Gladstone Small each took one-wickets.

Ian Botham named Player of the match for his all-round performance to took 1-wicket for 36-runs in 7-overs including a maiden after scoring a career-best superb 79 off facing 73-balls including 11-fours & 2-sixes with strike rate of 108.21.

England revved up for this month's cricket World Cup with a crushing 71-run victory over New Zealand in a rain-shortened 40-over match.

The win completed a three-nil in the one-day games, England also took the test series two-nil to achieve a rare unbeaten run on a major tour.

England virtually won the game with its opening partnership, Experimental openers Ian Botham and Graeme Hick smashed 60 in 10 overs to set the side up for a massive total of 7-255.

New Zealand was never really in the hunt after losing Rod Latham in the first over and managed only 8-184, Chris Lewis, relishing the fast and bouncy pitch, bowled a hostile opening spell. 

After. removing Latham, he felled John Wright, with an illegal short-pitched ball, which hit the left-hander on the temple and forced him to retire hurt, angering the large crowd.

Derek Pringle then removed Mark Greatbatch and the New Zealand captain, Martin Crowe, cheaply to have New Zealand effectively four for 23.

Wright bravely came back to score a bright 36, including one hooked six off Gladstone Small.

The match was shortened by 10 overs because of rain. Crowe won the toss but nothing went right for him from then on.

Ian Smith dropped Hick in the first over and Botham proceeded to smash the bowling all over the ground. He scored his highest score of 79, by seven runs, hitting two sixes and 11 fours off just 73 balls in a typically belligerent and innovative innings.

Botham hit shots of enormous power, some of them from baseball or golf rather than a cricket textbook.

Hick went to a fine Greatbatch catch on 18. With England's total on 125, Botham placed a catch to Greatbatch at deep-long off off Rod Latham.
