Dean Jones's wretched season took another turn for the worse when the Victorian suffered a chipped right thumb in the World Series Cricket match against Pakistan at the MCG.
Jones top-scored with 84 out of Australia's 6-212 but batted in pain for much of his innings after being struck on the right hand by fast bowler Waqar Younis.
X-rays taken during the tea break revealed the 31-year-old had suffered a chip in the thumb, putting a damper on Australia's 32-run victory over the World Cup champions.
The Pakistanis had hardly looked like world beaters since arriving in December and Javed Miandad's unpredictable side batted out its alloted 50 overs for a miserable 7-180.
Jones came to crease at 1-9 after the early loss of vice-captain Mark Taylor and provided the backbone of the innings, sharing a 124-run stand with David Boon, who contributed a solid 64.
Waqar could not break his spirit, even if he did crack his thumb, but the brilliant young Pakistani eventually had his revenge when he shattered Jones's middle-stump.
Waqar dispatched Mark Waugh in the same manner but a late flurry from Allan Border and Tony Dodemaide pushed the total past 200.
Border was unbeaten on 14 and became just the fourth batsman after Desmond Haynes, Javed Miandad and Viv Richards to post 6000 one-day runs when he reached 11.
Pakistan has struggled since arriving in Australia in December and looked barely a shadow of the side that won the World Cup last March.
The tourists never really got going in their run chase until the total was 4-119 after 41 overs, by which time the required run-rate had climbed to a 10 an over.
Captain Javed Miandad and Rameez Raja both contributed 40 while Salim Malik chipped in with 37, but the Pakistanis bowed out of the competition with barely a murmur.
Craig McDermott turned the screws early with a superb opening spell of 5-2-8-1 while Steve Waugh allowed only 22 runs from his eight overs in the middle of the innings.
The Australians will meet the West Indies in the finals, starting in Sydney on Saturday, with the knowledge they have never beaten the Caribbean side in a finals series.
The West Indies beat Australia in 1981-82, 83-84, 84-85 and '88-89 but missed the finals in 86-87 and last year when Australia won the Cup.
