England's cricketers, inspired by an outstanding century from Alec Stewart and a thunderous 71 not out from Graeme Hick, overpowered Pakistan for the second time in three days on Friday.
Stewart scored an accomplished 103, his first one-day international century, as England won the second game of its five-match limited-over series by 39 runs at The Oval.
England, with Neil Fairbrother contributing a rapid 63 despite a pulled hamstring, piled up 5-302 in 55 overs its highest one-day total against Pakistan.
The touring team, fired by a rapid 86 from opener Rameez Raja, boldly went for the target in ideal batting conditions.
But from the prosperity of 1-144 in the 27th over, Pakistan wickets fell at crucial stages.
Pace bowler Derek Pringle cut short threatening innings by Salim Malik and Inzamam ul-Haq while Ian Botham removed Javed Miandad for 38 and ran out all-rounder Naveed Anjum from his own bowling.
Pakistan ultimately subsided to 263 all out from 50.5 overs, giving England a 2-0 lead after its opening win at Lord's on Wednesday.
The series will be completed in August after five tests between the two countries.
As opener, wicketkeeper and vice-captain, Stewart is making an effective and versatile contribution in one or more of these roles for his country at both test and one-day level.
He is gradually growing in stature as a batsman, as he demonstrated at The Oval with an innings marked by fluent driving, crisp cutting and firm strokes off his legs.
