Victorian seamer Paul Reiffel took 4-13 as Australia routed South Africa for 69 to win last night's World Series Cup cricket match by 103 runs.
Defending a meagre 9-172 on a seaming wicket, Australia dismissed the tourists in 28 overs which took only two hours and six minutes.
Gritty Jonty Rhodes was not out four-after coming in to bat with a broken left hand sustained while fielding.
Man-of-the-match Reiffel captured 3-0 from 19 balls at one stage. He also scored a valuable unbeaten 29, took two catches and effected a run-out as South Africa made its lowest total in one-day cricket.
From his next 19 balls he captured 3-0 wicketkeeper David Richardson (1) and top-scorer Hansie Cronje (20) caught behind and Richard Snell clean bowled for a duck.
NSW paceman Glenn McGrath chipped in with the wickets of debutant Gary Kirsten (4) and Daryll Cullinan (1), while Blues' team-mate Steve Waugh grabbed Craig Matthews (7) and Allan Donald first ball to wrap up the match.
Earlier Australia was in deep trouble at 6-96 as Cronje (1-14 from 10 overs), Matthews (3-23) and Fanie de Villiers, (3-37) bowled as if the ball was on a string.
But a virus-weakened wicket-keeper Ian Healy (38) and Reiffel kept their cool and eked out runs with the view of consuming the full 50 overs.
Their seventh-wicket stand of 68 in better than even time was swelled by 41 from the last four
overs.
Wessels and coach Mike Procter refused to blame the pitch for the loss.
"We should have bowled and batted a lot better," Procter said. "Our bowlers should have performed better than the Australians in those conditions."
South Africa conceded 15 runs in wides and no-balls and while Australia returned the favour with 10, Procter said the home side's position after 20 overs of 3-76 was too great a start to give away.
