The Limited overs series match between Pakistan and Australia was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of a waterlogged pitch.

The teams agreed to play a 15-over-a-side exhibition to placate a crowd of 50,000, who had waited several hours before the umpires declared the pitch unfit for international cricket.

Police earlier used batons to control unruly spectators crowding the gates of the Gujranwala Cricket Ground. Witnesses said more than 20 people were slightly wounded.

Water seeped under the tarpaulin covers and saturated both ends of the pitch after an early morning downpour, which lasted nearly two hours. Ground staff mopped up puddles with cloths and buckets. but play never looked likely.

The match was to have been a dress rehearsal for the final of the series which the two sides will play in Lahore on Sunday.
