Captain Mohammad Azharuddin's classy half-century before Anil Kumble, Rajesh Chauhan, Javagal Srinath and Manoj Prabhakar's each two wickets helped to India to a thrilling 1-run victory over Sri Lanka and take a 1-0 lead in a exciting finish game of the first ODI.

India scored 212-8 in 50 overs with top scorer by Mohammad Azharuddin cracked a 53 off 57-balls, Navjot Sidhu struck 39 off 69-balls including 3-fours, Manoj Prabhakar scored 39 off 77-balls included 2-fours.

Kapil Dev hit 27 off 31-balls including 2-fours & a six and Sachin Tendulkar scored 21 off 39-balls included a boundary.

Sri Lanka best bowler by Ruwan Kalpage picked up 3-wickets for 42-runs in 10-overs with economy rate of 4.20, Champaka Ramanayake captured two-wickets, Asanka Gurusinha, Sanath Jayasuriya and Pramodya Wickramasinghe each took one-wickets.

Sri Lanka bowled out for 211 in 49.2 overs with top scorer by Chandika Hathurusinghe scored 64 off 121-balls including two boundaries.

Aravinda de Silva struck 62 off 79-balls including 2-sixes & a four, Roshan Mahanama cracked a 24 off 49-balls included 4-fours and Sanath Jayasuriya scored a run-a-ball 17-runs contained a boundary.

India best bowler by Anil Kumble captured two-wickets for 22-runs in 10-overs including two maidens with economy rate of 2.20, Debutant Rajesh Chauhan - who took 2-wickets for 41-runs in 10-overs on his debut ODI match.

Manoj Prabhakar, Javagal Srinath both took 2-wickets and one for Kapil Dev.

Mohammad Azharuddin named Player of the match for his captain innings of classy 53 off 57-balls including 2-fours & a six.
