Match Report:
England's international summer ended in controversy as Pakistan sealed a narrow victory in the final Texaco Trophy one-day international at Trent Bridge.
The tourists completed their tour on a winning note after defeats at Old Trafford and Edgbaston, as they grabbed a two wicket triumph after overhauling England's total of 246 all out with balls remaining.
But England coach David Lloyd and captain Michael Atherton were both left bemused by a controversial run out decision which proved turning point in a thrilling finale.
Needing 12 runs for victory on the last ball of the 48th over, Rashid Latif set off for a run but was sent back by Saqlain Mushtaq and appeared to be out of his ground as Atherton hit the stumps with an underarm throw.
Umpire David Shepherd asked standby offical Raymond Julian to consult TV pictures of the incident and Latif began walking off, but had to be recalled when he was ruled not out.
Lloyd stressed: "it was definitely out. It was a direct hit. The umpire must have pressed the wrong button."
Atherton agreed: "I thought it was out. He was walking off and the England coach had his arms raised on balcony and then the green light came on - all very strange."
But Test and Country Cricket Board spokesman Richard Little explained: "The third umpire confirmed that he was not out. He did not get a definitive view of the incident from TV pictures so he was not out."
Atherton, forced to retire hurt after being hit on the right thumb by 18-year-old paceman Shahid Najir before resuming his innings, insisted he is unlikely to miss Lancashire's NatWest Trophy final date with Essex next Saturday.
He also praised the contribution of Nick Knight, who became the first English player to successive centuries in one-day internationals since Graham Gooch achieved the feat against Australia in 1985.

England best bowler by Adam Hollioake claimed a 4-wickets for 45-runs in 8.4-overs, Peter Martin took 2-wickets and one for Robert Croft - Darren Gough.

Nick Knight and Ijaz Ahmed shared the player of the series, Knight contributed 264 runs with average of 132, while Ijaz added 186 runs with average of 62 in the three-match series.
