Requiring 233 for victory, New Zealand got the winning runs with one ball to spare in the final over, and one wicket standing. ending at 9-236.
The New Zealanders seemed to have the game under control at 4-204, in the 46th over with Chris Cairns and Adam Parore well set.
However, they lost five wickets in 18 balls as Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis made late inroads through the New Zealand middle and lower order.
Needing 10 runs off the last over with Akram bowling, the Kiwis were in luck as they picked up a leg bye and Gavin Larsen got two runs off a no-ball early in the over.
Larsen then cracked a full toss to the extra cover fence and after two dot balls, lifted another no ball over cover for two, ensuring the win with a boundary to the vacant third man fence.
Younis finished with three for 55, all wickets coming in the 49th over, while Akram, Aaqib Javed and Aamir Sohail collected two apiece.
