A stroke-filled 83 from Shivnarine Chanderpaul piloted West Indies to an eight-wicket triumph over India in the rain-hit first one-day cricket international at Queen's Park Oval.

22-year-old The Chanderpaul transported his rich vein of form during the preceding Test series into an innings lasting 80 balls that was the cornerstone of West Indies' 149 for two off 27.5 overs.

Brian Lara (25 not out), hit the winning boundary for the West Indies, who were set a revised target of 146 off 33 overs after rain delayed their reply. India had won the toss and batted but the West Indies" bowlers, led by pacers Curtly Ambrose and Franklyn Rose, exploited the helpful conditions to rout them for 179 in 48.3 overs.

Captain Sachin Tendulkar hit the topscore of 44 but was unlucky to be given out caught behind off Ambrose, who captured four for 36 off 9.3 overs. Rose, playing his first one-day international, assisted Ambrose with three for 25 in an impressive 10-over spell.

Man-of-the-match Chanderpaul added 43 in an opening stand with Stuart Williams, who made 14 before he skied a delivery from leg-spin bowler Anil Kumble to mid-off in the ninth over.

Chanderpaul's only blemish came at 58 when he struck a firm return chance through the hands of left-arm spin bowler Sunil Joshi. Otherwise, the Guyanese showed the full range of his strokes by striking 12 fours, three of them coming off the first over bowled by Trinidad-born allrounder Robin Singh.

When Chanderpaul drove a full toss from fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad to mid-off in the 24th over, West Indies were just 14 runs away from victory.

After Ambrose dropped a return chance when he was one, Tendulkar counter-attacked the West Indies' bowlers as he treated the near capactity crowd to a volley of strokes.

In the fourth over, he struck pacer Ian Bishop for four boundaries but after losing Navjot Sidhu LBW to Ambrose in the seventh over, Tendulkar was questionably caught by wicket-keeper Courtney Browne in the 13th over.

Television replays showed the ball apparently deflected off the batsman's right bicep.

Former captain Mohammad Azharuddin's wretched form on this tour continued when he chopped a short, rising ball into his leg-stump in the 17th over, and Rahul Dravid was brilliantly caught right-handed by a leaping Carl Hooper at mid wicket off Rose to leave India 86 for four in the 21st over.

Before Rose had him caught by Browne in the 33rd over, Ajay Jadeja added 33 runs with Nayan Mongia for the fifth wicket to help beef-up the total. Singh was caught by Williams at slip off Bishop for two and after a rain stopped play for 68 minutes with India on 146 for six in 39 overs and prompted an early lunch, Ambrose bowled both Sunil Joshi for eight and Nayan Mongia for 29 when play resumed.

Five overs earlier, Anil Kumble had perished to left-arm spin bowler Jimmy Adams, whose direct hit at the striker's end from point brought the innings to a conclusion with the run out of Prasad.

India's innings was interrupted thrice for inclement weather which reduced play by 90 minutes.
