An unbroken opening stand between captain Sachin Tendulkar and left-hander Saurav Ganguly formalised a 10-wicket triumph for India over West Indies in the rain-hit second one-day limited overs cricket international at Queen's Park Oval.

India's bowlers set up the victory, exploiting a helpful pitch to send West Indies, who were sent in to bat, crashing for 121 off 43.5 overs.

When rain stopped India's innings at 4:30 p.m. for 25 minutes, their target was revised to 113 runs off 40 overs. By then, Tendulkar and Ganguly had shared 84 off 18.4 overs and needed a further 27 balls overs to score the additional runs.

Tendulkar struck six fours in his unbeaten 65 off 70 balls and Ganguly, who used a runner late in his innings, made 39 not out off twice as many balls as India levelled the four-match series at 1-1, reaching 116 without loss off 23.1 overs.

Fortune favoured Tendulkar on 19 when West Indies captain and fast bowler Courtney Walsh dropped a return catch. Otherwise, there were no blemishes in another fine innings from the 24-year-old batsman from Mumbai.

India's win had been orchestrated by their bowlers, who gained bounce and movement from the pitch. New-ball bowlers Venkatesh Prasad, who took two for 22 off eight overs, and man-of-the-match Abey Kuruvilla, three for 23 off 10 overs, demolished the West Indies top order.

The host team declined to 44 for six in the 17th over and it looked like the West Indies were in danger of falling for less than the 87 runs they made against Australia in Sydney during the 1992-93 World Series Cup, which is their lowest score in 334 previous one-day internationals.

In the third over, Prasad gained a LBW verdict against opening batsman Stuart Williams (3) and dismissed Brian Lara for a first-ball "duck" when the left-hander provided wicket-keeper Syed Karim with the first of his four dismissals in the innings.

Kuruvilla broke the back-bone of West Indies batting by claiming three wickets in the space of 10 balls to send his opponents sliding from 32 for two to 32 fo five.

Carl Hooper (14) lofted a delivery to mid-on and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (12) got an inside edged which Karim held brilliantly in the 10th over, before Roland Holder was dubiously caught by Karim off the same bowler in the 11th over for a "duck".

Courtney Browne was unfortunately caught and bowled by leg-spinner Anil Kumble for seven when the ball ricocheted off the right collar bone of silly point fielder Rahul Dravid. However, left-hander Jimmy Adams, who lost his place in the side for the preceding Test series, made an unbeaten 35 off 85 balls and lan Bishop scored 31 off 76 balls to revive the innings in a stand of 56 in 21.5 overs.

Kumble, two for 22 off 8.5 overs, and off-spinner Noel David, three for 21 off eight, shared the last five wickets to see West Indies dismissed for their lowest total against India in 53 limited overs internationals. Their previous lowest was 123 at Calcutta in the Hero Cup in 1993.
