Alec Stewart's brilliant century before Dean Headley, Mark Ealham's each two wickets and Matthew Fleming's impressive debut four-wickets gives England thrilling 7-run victory over India, despite a captain Sachin Tendulkar's fighting 91 in a nail-biting opening match of a Akai-Singer Champions Trophy.

  • England's 7-run win was their joint third smallest victory by terms of runs in one-day international and It is their joint narrowest win against India in ODIs, jointly with their 7-run win at Chandigarh in 1985.
  • Alec Stewart's 116 was his highest score for England in one-day international and the fourth highest-score by an England batsman against India in ODIs.
  • Alec Stewart became the seventh England batsman to score a century against India in ODIs.
  • Alec Stewart became the tenth England batsman to scored two centuries in ODIs.
  • England lost their last seven wickets for just 39-runs - which was their eighth worst last seven-wicket collapse in one-day international and it is their third worst last 7-wicket collapse against India in ODIs. They went from 211 for 3 to 250 for all out.

England bowled out for 250 in 49.5 overs with top scorer by Alec Stewart cracked a career-best 116 off 111-balls - which was his 2nd ODI hundred and his first century against India in ODIs.

Nick Knight struck 42 off 60-balls including 2-fours & a six, Graeme Hick hit 32 off 42-balls included two-fours & 1-six and Ali Brown scored 18 off 25-balls contained 2-fours.

India best bowler by Javagal Srinath picked up 3-wickets for 37-runs 8.5-overs, Abey Kuruvilla captured three-wickets and one for Rajesh Chauhan - Anil Kumble.

India bowled out for 243 in 49.3 overs with top scorer by Sachin Tendulkar struck 91 off 87-balls - who fell nine-run short of his century - including 4-fours & 2-sixes 

Ajay Jadeja cracked a 50 off 69-balls including a boundary, Sourav Ganguly struck 29 off 31-balls included 4-fours and Saba Karim hit 29 off 34-balls contained 5-fours.

England best bowler by Debutant Matthew Fleming - who took 4-wickets for 45-runs in 9.3-overs on his debut ODI match, Dean Headley, Mark Ealham both took 2-wickets and one for Adam Hollioake.

Alec Stewart named Player of the match for his brilliant batting performance to scored a career-best 116-runs knocked off facing 111-balls including 9-fours & a six with strike rate of 104.50.
