Joe Root's record-breaking double-hundred and bowlers attack helped to England's record 227-run victory over India and take a 1-0 lead in a one-sided game of the first Test match.

England's 227-run win was their largest victory by terms of runs against India in Indian soil in Test matches. This is the England's first win against India at Chepauk, Chennai after 36-years. India conceded more than 550 in a single innings of a home Test for the first time since 2011. Joe Root's 218 was the highest score by an England batsman in India in Test matches, surpassing the previous record of 207 held by Mike Gatting at same venue in 1985. 200 : Dom Sibley and Joe Root set up the fifth highest third-wicket partnership for England against India in Test matches. England's 578 was their ninth highest score against India in Test matches and it is their second highest total in India and also their second highest-total at Chennai in Tests. Ravichandran Ashwin is the first spinner in over 100 years to take a wicket off the first ball of an innings in Test matches after Bobby Peel (1888) and Bert Vogler (1907). Ravichandran Ashwin's 6 for 61 was his second best bowling figures for India against England in Test matches. Ravichandran Ashwin's 6 for 61 was his 28th 5-wicket haul or more wickets for India in Test matches and the eighth in the list of most five-wicket haul or more wickets in Tests. Ishant Sharma became the third Indian fast bowler to take a 300 wickets in Test matches after Kapil Dev (434) and Zaheer Khan (311) and the sixth in the list of leading wicket-taker for India in Tests.

England 2nd Innings scored 178 for all-out in 46.3 overs with top scorer by Joe Root 40, Ollie Pope 28, Dom Bess 25, Jos Buttler 24, Dan Lawrence 18 and Dom Sibley 16.

2nd Innings India best bowler by Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a 6-wicket haul for 61-runs in 17.3-overs including two maidens, Shahbaz Nadeem took 2-wickets and one for Ishant Sharma - Jasprit Bumrah.

India 2nd Innings 192 for all-out in 58.1 overs - with top scorer by Virat Kohli 72, Shubman Gill 50 and Cheteshwar Pujara 15.

2nd Innings England best bowler by Jack Leach claimed a 4-wickets for 76-runs in 26-overs including four maidens, James Anderson picked up 3-wickets for 17-runs in 11-overs included 4-maidens, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Dom Bess each took one-wickets.

Joe Root named Player of the match for his masterclass batting performance to scored a record-breaking 218-runs knocked off facing 377-balls including 19-fours & 2-sixes.
