Martin Crowe's superb 68, All-rounder Lance Cairns whirlwind unbeaten 40 with two wickets, Richard Hadlee and Ewen Chatfield's combined 5-wickets helped to New Zealand resounding 86-run victory over Sri Lanka and clinch the three-match series with 2-1 in a series decider of the third ODI.

Match Stats : 
  • This is the New Zealand's second bilateral ODI series win against Sri Lanka and It is their first bilateral ODI series win in Sri Lankan soil.
  • New Zealand's 86-run win was their fifth largest victory by terms of runs in One-day international and It is their third biggest win against Sri Lanka in ODIs.

* New Zealand Having unexpectedly lost the second game in Mozatuwe on Saturday, New Zealand totalled 201 for eight in their 44 overs before dismussing Sri Lanka for 115, Hadlee taking 3-19 in six overs, with 5.5 overs to spare.

* Their margin of 86 runs seemed unlikely when Arjuna Ranatunge removed Jeff Crowe, Jeremy Coney and Richard Hadlee cheaply and the eighth wicket fell at 154.

* Then Chris Cairns, one of the world's most effective one-day batsmen, took the Sri Lankan attack apart, hammering Vinothen John for 26 in the last over of the innings, including three massive sixes over mid-wicket.



New Zealand scored 201-8 in the alloted 40 overs with top scorer by Martin Crowe cracked a 68 off 84-balls including 4-fours.

Lance Cairns hammered a unbeaten 40 off 26-balls and Bruce Edgar scored 24 off 50-balls included 2-fours.

Sri Lanka best bowler by Arjuna Ranatunga picked up 3-wickets, Ravi Ratnayeke, Somachandra De Silva, Vinothen John each took one-wickets.

Sri Lanka scored 115 for all-out in 38.1 overs with top scorer by Sidath Wettimuny cracked a 33 off 62-balls including 2-fours. Somachandra De Silva 14 not out and Arjuna Ranatunga 13.

New Zealand best bowler by Richard Hadlee picked up 3-wickets for 19-runs in 6-overs, Ewen Chatfield, Lance Cairns both took 2-wickets and one for Stephen Boock - Jeremy Coney.

Lance Cairns named Player of the match for his all-round performance to took 2-wickets for 14-runs in 7-overs including two maidens after smashing a whirlwind unbeaten 40 off 26-balls included 4-fours and 3-sixes with strike rate of 153.84.
