Ravi Shastri's steady half-century and Dilip Vengsarkar's 89 sets up to India tense two-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, despite a Roy Dias - Arjuna Ranatunga's blazing fifties and take a 1-0 lead in the first ODI.


* This is the India's first ODI win against Sri Lanka in Sri Lankan soil in their first attempt.


Sri Lanka scored 241-6 in the alloted 45 overs with top scorer by Roy Dias hammered a 80 off 67-balls, Arjuna Ranatunga blasted a 64 off 48-balls including 5-fours & a six with strike rate of 133.33.

Amal Silva scored 36 off consuming 75-balls including a boundary, Duleep Mendis hammered a unbeaten 29 off 17-balls included 3-fours with strike-rate of 170.58.

India best bowler by Chetan Sharma picked up 3-wickets, Debutant Gopal Sharma, Ravi Shastri and Mohinder Amarnath each took one-wickets.

India chased 242-8 in 44.3 overs with top scorer by Dilip Vengsarkar blasted a 89 off 82-balls including 11-fours with strike rate of 108.53.

Ravi Shastri scored 67 off 102-balls including five boundaries, Kris Srikkanth hit 29 off 37-balls included 2-fours & a six and Kapil Dev 24.

Sri Lanka best bowler by Rumesh Ratnayake, Roger Wijesuriya both took 2-wickets and one for Arjuna Ranatunga - Ravi Ratnayeke.

Roy Dias named Player of the match for his blazing 80-runs knocked off facing 67-balls including 8-fours & a six with strike rate of 119.40.
