WEST INDIES completed a clean sweep of their 10 qualifying matches in the World Series Cup tournament when they beat Sri Lanka by 82 runs at the WACA ground in Perth.

The result ended Sri Lanka's slim chance of reaching the best-of-three final series which will be between West Indies and Australia starting in Sydney on Wednesday.

West Indies, sent in to bat. scored 309 for six from their 50 overs with Larry Gomes making his first century in a limited-over international. They then restricted Sri Lanka to 227 for six.

The left-hander Gomes, whose batting is normally notable for caution rather than adventure, sruck out boldly to score 101 in 130 minutes with three sixes and six fours.

Farewell innings

But Gomes and his captain, Clive Lloyd, who in his farewell appearance in Perth made 54 not out from 29 balls, were indebted for their success to slipshod Sri Lankan fielding.

Gomes had three lives. When he was 16 wicketkeeper Silva dropped a simple catch off Ravi Ratnayeke, he survived a run-out chance on 27, and at 70 Mendis made a terrible mess of attempting to catch a skied ball at extra cover.

Lloyd, too, was dropped early on but Silva made some amends with the bat hitting 85 off 96 balls in 131 minutes before being sixth out at 137.
