  • Sri Lanka's 117-run win was their largest victory by terms of runs in One-day internationals, previous biggest win by 47-runs also against India at Manchester in the 1979 World Cup.
  • India's 78 was their second lowest score in a completed innings in One-day international and It is their worst-total against Sri Lanka in ODIs, previous completed lowest total was 191 at Manchester in the World Cup 1979.

* Sri Lanka provided India tumbling to a humiliating defeat in the first one-day international after police had to beat back thousands of fans trying to get into the packed stadium.

* The touring team Sri Lanka won the opening game by 117 runs in the five-match One-day international, with All-rounder Arjuna Ranatunge playing a leading role by claiming a career-best 4 for 14 and struck a Sri Lanka's second highest score of 31 - which he earned player of the match award.

* Sri Lanka, build by their lower-order batting line-up, made 8/195 off 46 overs and skittled India for 78 to the disappointment of the crowd of 55,000 packing the Green Park stadium.

* A combination of poor shots and superb catching contributed to India's demise, with all-rounder Ravi Ratnayeke picking 3/12 in 19-balls.



Sri Lanka scored 195-8 in the alloted 46 overs with top scorer by Asanka Gurusinha  cracked a 35 off 48-balls including 4-fours.

Arjuna Ranatunga struck 31 off 49-balls, Duleep Mendis scored 26 off 45-balls included 2-fours.

Ashantha de Mel hammered a unbeaten 23 off 13-balls including 2-fours & a six with strike rate of 176.92, Rumesh Ratnayake blasted a 19 off 10-balls included 3-fours & a six with strike rate of 190 and Guy de Alwis 15.

India best bowler by Maninder Singh picked up 3-wickets for 24-runs in 10-overs including two maidens with economy rate of 2.40, Kapil Dev captured 2-wickets for 10-runs in 7-overs included three maidens with economy rate of 1.42 and Debutant Bharat Arun - who took one-wicket on his debut ODI match.

India scored 78 for all-out in 24.1 overs with top scorer by Kris Srikkanth scored 17 off consuming 42-balls including a boundary, Dilip Vengsarkar 15 and Kapil Dev 9.

Sri Lanka best bowler by Arjuna Ranatunga claimed a career-best 4-wickets for 14-runs in 6-overs including a maiden with economy rate of 2.33.

Ravi Ratnayeke picked up 3-wickets for 12-runs in 3.1-overs and Rumesh Ratnayake took 2-wickets.
