KKR eliminated after washout in Bengaluru
Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) title defense came to an end in Bengaluru, where heavy rains led to a washout, confirming their elimination from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The one point earned from the abandoned match took KKR to 12 points, with a maximum possible 14, but other teams had already surpassed them.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Top-Two Ambitions
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), however, benefited from the point, moving to 17 points from 12 matches. A top-two finish would guarantee them two chances to make the final, a significant advantage in the IPL playoff format. Their closest rivals, Gujarat Titans (16 points from 11 matches) and Punjab Kings (15 points from 11 matches), still have a chance to overtake them.
Virat Kohli Fans Disappointed by Rain
The match was also notable for Virat Kohli fans, who turned out in whites to pay tribute to the RCB star after his Test retirement announcement. Despite the disappointment, fans are hoping for better weather for RCB's remaining home match against already-eliminated Sunrisers Hyderabad.
IPL Playoff Format
The IPL's unique playoff format gives top-two teams an advantage, allowing them to lose once without being eliminated. Only Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 has won the title after finishing outside the top two. With the Bengaluru rainy season in full swing, RCB will be keen on securing maximum points against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final home match.
