Part-time spinner Ravi Shastri captured a one-day career-best 5-15 as India routed Australia by 107 runs in the World Series Cup limited-overs match at the WACA ground.
India compiled 7-208 from its 50 overs and then enjoyed bowling with the aid of a late afternoon breeze to dismiss Australia in only 37.8 overs for a meagre 101 its second-lowest World Series total.
It was only Australia's third limited-overs. defeat in 13 months.
Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and opted to bat. He was confident of success after his younger bowlers produced an outstanding display with the wind to tie Friday's one-day match with the West Indies.
Opener Kris Srikkanth punished the Australian pacemen and exploited the requirement of only two fieldsmen over 30 metres from the bat in the first 15 overs to hit 60 runs off as many balls.
The Australian bowlers struggled, with only Bruce Reid, 0-16 from 10 overs, regularly posing a threat to the Indians.
Supporting roles by Sachin Tendulkar (36) and Praveen Amre (33) pushed the Indian total past 200.
Australia was unable to perform the same feat. Openers David Boon and Geoff Marsh struggled to score off Manoj Prabhakar and Kapil Dev with only three runs from the first five overs.
Boon was removed by Prabhakar for only one in the sixth over beginning a steady procession of Australians Captain Allan Border, who followed Dean Jones to the wicket after the Victorian was bowled for Kapil Dev for one, believed attack was the most productive policy and he scored 32 runs and joined Marsh in a partnership worth 46 runs.
When Marsh departed with the total at 3-52 it signalled the end of any resistance with the one-day world champions losing their next seven wickets for only 49 runs.
Shastri, introduced into the attack after the Indian pace bowlers had crippled the Australians at 5-71, cleaned up the tourists' loose ends in a display that proved spinners were of value on the traditionally bouncy WACA wicket.
After failing with the bat, scoring only 10 runs in 62 minutes, Shastri proved his worth at one stage taking three wickets for two runs.
