Rain robbed England of almost certain victory yesterday after Graham Gooch's men routed Pakistan for the second-lowest score in World Cup cricket history at Adelaide Oval.
Sent in on a gloomy day and on a pitch that had sweated from 40 consecutive hours under the covers, Pakistan was bowled out for a piffling 74 in 40.2 overs.
England made 1-17 from six overs before showers came down in the lunch break and set in. Three hours later, umpires Peter McConnell and Steve Bucknor called a resumption, with England needing 47 runs from 10 overs to win under the best 15-overs system used in Australia for rain-reduced matches.
But only two more overs were possible, seven fewer than the required 15 overs for a result game, before the match was abandoned at 5.23pm with England 1-24.
Both sides picked up a point with the Pakistanis lucky to have their rain prayers answered after a poor batting performance.
Gooch said, "It does seem strange when you bowl a side out for 74 and then have to chase 60; it takes some understanding.
"But we've got to play a system and it's the same for every team.
"As it turned out, it didn't matter anyway because there wasn't enough overs."
Pakistan's total was its lowest in 219 one-day internationals, beating 85 against England at Manchester in 1978. Only Canada's 45 against England at Leeds in 1979 was a worse World Cup effort.
All the England attack picked up wickets in conditions greatly assisting the seamers, while only three Pakistan batsmen posted double figures, two of them tail-enders.
Derek Pringle had the best bowling analysis for England, finishing with a miserly 3-8 off 8.2 overs, including a brilliant caught-and-bowled effort to remove opener Aamer Sohail.
Imran Khan, resting his sprained right shoulder, did not play.
England decided not to risk batsman Allan Lamb's troubled right hamstring, while all-rounder Chris Lewis could not bowl due to a side strain.
With five points from three games, unbeaten England faces Australia in Sydney in a day-night match on Thursday, while Pakistan, with three points, plays India at the SCG on Wednesday.
"In the end we ended up with a point and we're very pleased," said acting Pakistan captain Javed Miandad.
