A timely return to form by West Indies skipper Richie Richardson lifted his team to victory over India and kept its one-day series chances alive at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

Richardson hit a sparkling 72 from 120 deliveries with eight fours as the Windies roared to 4-192 in reply to the Indian total of 191.

The win gave the Windies four points in the series, one behind India and still needing victory in either of their two remaining matches to guarantee a finals berth.

The Indian attack made the Windies struggle early with right-arm swing bowler Jawagal Srinath keeping the free-flowing batsmen in check.

With Manoj Prabhakar on the spot at the other end, India slumped to 2-24 after 12 overs before Richardson combined with Desmond Haynes to lay the foundation for victory.

The pair added 109 in 168 deliveries for the third wicket as the Indian attack slowly faded.
Haynes hit five boundaries in his stay of 138 minutes and he gave the innings the steadiness it needed after Philo Wallace (4) and Brian Lara (4) failed to get going.

India must have thought a tropical cyclone had hit the 'Gabba when Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and sent his team in to bat on a perfect pitch.

After 19 overs the Windies pace attack had blown away five Indian batsmen for 62 and only an impressive 77 from promising youngster Sachin Tendulkar prevented a complete debacle.
He faced 130 deliveries for five fours and gave his more experienced team-mates a batting lesson.

All-rounder Kapil Dev added a late 28 but it was the early wayward bowling by the Windies pace attack that provided the second-highest total.

Sundries amounted to 36, which included 15 wides and eight no balls - Curtly Ambrose and Malcolm Marshall being the main offenders.

It was third-string paceman Anderson Cummins who wrought havoc, taking 5-31 from 9.3 overs - an effort which won him the man-of-the-match award.
