Melbourne's dismal wet summer allowed the West Indies to sneak away with one point for a "no result" from the World Series match against Australia at the MCG.

After the tourists struggled to 7-160 from 47 overs, persistent rain began falling just after 5pm and ruled out any chance of a result.

Play was eventually abandoned at 8.50pm before the Australian innings started.

Rain has fallen in Melbourne on each of the nine days of 1992 for the first time in more than a century and the wash-out left the West Indies still facing an uphill battle to qualify for the second spot in the finals.

Australia has nine points from six matches to be assured of a spot while India has five points from five games and the West Indies just two points from five matches.

The West Indians have been a disappointment this summer and Australia, thanks to a miserly spell of spin bowling from Peter Taylor, held the whip hand before the rain came.

Taylor, in partnership with Mike Whitney and Steve Waugh, reined in the score after veteran opener Desmond Haynes had given the West Indies some hope.

Haynes contributed 56 at the top of the order as the score marched to 1-97 in the 28th over before Taylor put the brakes on with 2-28 from 10 overs.

Whitney's 10 overs also allowed just 28 runs while Steve Waugh had bowled eight overs for 19 runs before the rain came.

Haynes was slow to start but fellow opener Philo Wallace provided the impetus at the top of the innings.

Wallace struck 22 from 36 deliveries, including consecutive boundaries from Whitney, before he tried to pull the quicker Craig McDermott and was well caught by Steve Waugh at square leg,
Wallace went at 33 and the elegant Brian Lara joined with Haynes to take the score to 97 after 27 overs.

Lara, promoted in the order ahead of captain Richie Richardson, always looked comfortable for his 22 before he tried a second run on Tom Moody's arm and was run out.

Lara broke up the attack by pushing the ball into the gaps while Haynes got into stride by taking 13 from Moody's opening
over.

The vice-captain drove Moody down the ground for four and then hooked him over square leg for six into the uncompleted section of the new Great Southern Stand.

He reached his half-century in a tick over two hours, turning Peter Taylor for a single from the 99th ball he faced.

Haynes tried to loft Taylor soon after but only succeeded in skying a catch to Steve Waugh at deep mid-wicket.

The tourists were cruising at 3.5 an over while Lara and Haynes were together but the arrival of the out of form Richardson enabled Allan Border to rein in the run-rate. Richardson, who destroyed Australia in the West Indies last year, scratched about for 31 deliveries for 13, before being brilliantly run out.

Carl Hooper turned McDermott to mid-wicket and Mark Waugh flicked the ball into the stumps, despite being off-balance, to beat Richardson home by centimetres.

In 12 innings on tour, Richardson's best score is a measly 22 and the rest of the middle order has looked lost without his usual contribution.

Hooper was bowled by Taylor for seven and Marshall feathered a catch to lan Healy behind the wicket from the bowling of Whitney as the innings fell apart.
