A gamble schemed at a West Indies team meeting morning paid off handsomely with a nine-wicket World Series win over Australia at the WACA Ground.

The West Indies took a chance on using part-time medium pacer Phil Simmons for 10 overs, after strengthening the batting, and he responded with a career-best performance.

Simmons captured 2-22, bowling his overs early in the innings and doing much to restrict the Australians to 7-160 from 50 overs.

In reply, the West Indies cruised comfortably to 1-164 in 38.3 overs as Desmond Haynes returned to form with 81 from 121 balls and Simmons played the supporting role for 43.

Simmons had previously taken just 11 wickets in 43 one-day internationals at an average of 43 but he became a front-line bowler when the tourists dropped pace bowler Kenneth Benjamin from the team that lost to Pakistan on Friday and added middle-order batsman Gus Logie.

With Courtney Walsh on the side-lines with a thigh injury and Patrick Patterson overlooked because of poor form, Simmons became the West Indies' first-change bowler with the Australians already struggling at 2-15 on a flat wicket.

The Australians' demise began in the second over when opener Mark Taylor was run out for a duck.

Simmons tightened the screws by removing Dean Jones (14) and Steve Waugh (four) as the hosts crashed to 4-35 after 19 overs. Simmons's efforts strangled the scoring rate, which slipped to 1.78 runs an over, after Steve Waugh's departure.

It took the Australians 24.4 overs to reach 50 runs in the second-slowest first 50 in World Series history. India took 25.2 overs to pass the mark last summer.

Australian captain Allan Border tried to break the shackles imposed by Simmons and West Indies pace-man Curtly Ambrose but was run out in the process for 15 to leave his team on the brink of collapse at 5-64.

Border aggravated his hamstring injury and is unlikely to play against the Windies in the day-nighter in Sydney on Tuesday.

Middle-order pair Mark Waugh (36) and Greg Matthews (32) performed some damage control with a patient 58-run partnership for the sixth wicket which steered Australian into triple figures.

West Indies openers Desmond Haynes and Brian Lara had little difficulty in guiding their team towards victory.

They compiled 53 runs before Lara was brilliantly caught by Border at second slip off the bowling of Paul Reiffel for 29.

Haynes was in outstanding form, crashing 11 boundaries, with Simmons playing the anchor role in an 111-run partnership.
