Pakistan won the opening match of the World Series Cricket competition at the WACA ground beating the West Indies by five wickets.

The scores: West Indies 9-197 off 50 overs; Pakistan 5-199 off 49.2 overs. Set a target of 198 runs to win, Pakistan reached five for 199 with four balls to spare.

Captain Javed Miandad top-scored for Pakistan with 59 runs; team-mate Wasim Akram was named man of the match after taking 4-46 and scoring an unbeaten 21.

Earlier, Pakistan had overcome injury to another key player and restricted its winning target to 198 in the first day-night match of the series, against the West Indies.

All-rounder Aamir Suhail left the field with a hamstring injury half-way through the West Indian innings, placing in doubt his appearance in the Pakistan batting line-up.

Outstanding bowling by pacemen pair Wasim Akram, with 4-46, and Waqar Younis, plus the spin of Mushtaq Ahmed helped Pakistan restrict the West Indies to 9-197 from 50 overs.

Left-hander Brian Lara top-scored with 59 to assist the West Indies from the precarious position of 3-64 after 18 overs.

Aamir could deliver only' eight overs before limping from the ground in the 27th over. He overstretched when attempting to run out Carl Hooper, who survived the attempt but himself suffered a strained calf muscle and needed a runner toward the end of his innings."

Aamir's injury comes on top of a back stress fracture to front-line pace bowler Aaqib Javed in Pakistan's preparation in Perth, but by the time his captain, Javed Miandad, had reconsidered his bowling options, the World Cup champions had control of the contest.
