A destructive Mike Whitney terrorised the West In- dies last night but could only restore some damaged Australian pride, rather than carry Allan Border's side through to the semi-finals of the one- day World Cup.

Whitney led Australia to a 57-run victory in its final qualifying match at the MCG with a burst of 4-20 in six overs, leaving the defending one-day world champion one tantalising point short of a semi-final berth.

After Australia tallied 6-216 from its 50 overs, Whitney smashed through the middle order as the West Indies crumbled to 159 all out from 42.4 overs.

Only makeshift opener Brian Lara offered any significant resistance with an enterprising hand of 70 from 97 deliveries.

Australia needed a lot of luck to sneak into the semis but Pakistan snuffed out any faint hopes it may have had with a seven-wicket win over previously unbeaten New Zealand in Christchurch.

Pakistan will now meet New Zealand in Auckland in the first semi-final on Saturday while England will play South Africa in a day-night game in Sydney on Sunday.

None of the four teams in the semi-finals has won a World Cup.

Australia is now left with the ugly realisation that it is the first defending World Cup champion to miss the semi-finals.

A new champion will be, crowned in a week's time at the MCG, all four semi-finalists yet to have won the Cup.
