England snatched victory by four wickets off the last ball in a breathtaking climax to the opening
one-day cricket international against India.
Opener Alec Steward spurred England in their pursuit of 224 in 48 overs and Neil Fairbrother
guided the touring team home with a marvellously inventive 47 not out. But the innings of the day was played by Vinod Kambli, who came of age as an international batsman with a maiden century at this level on the day he celebrated both his 21st birthday and his return to the national side.
In partnership with his Bombay former school friend Sachin Tendulkar (81 not out), he added 154 unbroken in 28 overs --a fourth wicket record for Indian on home soil in all one-day internationals.
The stand lifted India to 233 for three when the innings closed after 48 overs.
When Stewart and Mike Gatting (30) took England to 148 for two with 12 overs to go they looked like strolling home, but a flurry of wickets left them chasing 19 off the last two overs.
Fairbrother, who averages eight in tests but more than 40 in the limited overs game, underlined his expertise in the shorter version as he took 13 off Kapil Dev, and, with Chris Lewis (eight not out), scrambled the remaining six off Manoj Prabhakar's last over.
A capacity crowd of around 25.000 watched the match.
