Another Pakistan batting collapse provided India with its first win of the cricket World Cup and Australia with further incentive to beat England in Sydney on Thursday.
The Pakistanis were 2-105, but lost 8-68 to be all out for 173, chasing India's 7-216 off 49 overs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Man of the match Sachin Tendulkar, who finished on 54 not out and took 1-37 from his 10 overs, set up the Indian win, and all-rounder Kapil Dev (2-30 from 10) and his opening partner Manoj Prabhakar (2-22 from 10) condemned Pakistan to an uphill struggle to qualify for the tournament semi-finals.
Both India and Pakistan now have just three points from their four Cup games, Australia is on two and can scurry to a mid-table position if successful against England on Friday.
The Indians' long summer in Australia may have made them homesick, but gave them a decided edge against a Pakistan side which is clearly still trying to find its feet.
The Pakistan batsmen have yet to fire against quality opposition on the bouncier Australian wickets.
Captain Imran Khan believed his team's surrendering to England to be all out for 74-on Sunday was a one-off, but today's performance proves the Pakistani batting needs surgery.
India, which has played without a hint of luck in this tournament, might have turned the corner with the 43-run victory, although another slow start could have. caused problems against the leading teams.
The Indians had flagged their intention to get off to a swift start by dumping Ravi Shastri and promoting youngster Ajay Jadeja up the order to open with Kris Srikkanth.
But the usually aggressive Srikkanth had extraordinary difficulty getting bat to ball before he finally departed for just five from 40 balls, caught behind from the bowling of Aaqib Javed to have India at 1-25 in the 10th over.
Wasim Akram strayed-bowling five wides and two no-balls but veteran Imran Khan and Aaqib kept the brakes on.
Mohammad Azharuddin, fresh from his 93-run thrashing of the Australian attack, joined Jadeja and the pair went about their task efficiently.
Good running and some splendid driving from Azharuddin helped the pair put on 61 before leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed had the Indian captain caught behind for 32. India was 2-86.
Jadeja (46) went in the 28th, caught by a diving Zahid Fazal at midwicket off the bowling of Haider, but that brought Tendulkar to the wicket for a 46-run partnership with his former schoolmate, Vinod Kambli (24).
Sanjay Manjreker (0) came and went, playing on from a Mushtaq delivery to have India stumbling at 5-148 in the 40th over.
Enter Kapil Dev. The champion all-rounder scurried between wickets like a youth, knocked up two fours and clubbed a six over deep mid off. He departed in the 48th, but India was breathing a little easier at 6-208.
The Pakistanis also found the going tough early, with Manoj Prabhakar beating the bat repeatedly.
Kapil Dev broke through first by trapping Haq (2) in front when the score was just eight.
Zahid Fazal went soon after, caught behind by Kiran More off the bowling of Prabhakar for two. In the sixth over Pakistan was 2-17 when the man most likely to succeed in a crisis.
Javed Miandad. joined opener Aamir Sohail. The pair put on 88 before Sohail (62 off 103) clipped a full toss from Tendulkar to Srikkanth at midwicket. Miandad was defiant and talkative.
The umpires had to have a word with Indian captain Azharuddin after Miandad and wicketkeeper Kieran More had words after an appeal for caught behind.
Miandad survived the appeal and the argument, but watched as Pakistan collapsed, losing the last eight wickets for 68. Four of those wickets went for just 14- Miandad among them, bowled by Javagal Srinath for 40.
Some fine fielding, which provided two run-outs, and some exceptional bowling, particularly from Prabhaker, meant the result was never in doubt when Miandad departed with the score on 141.
