India's run of bad luck in the World Cup cricket tournament changed in Hamilton with a win over Zimbabwe on run rate in a rain-affected game.

The Indians had been having a wretched series, but yesterday the rules favoured them and they got two points to keep their Cup hopes alive.

They are now in equal third place with Sri Lanka on five points from five matches. Zimbabwe remains point-less.

When rain delayed the start the number of overs was reduced to 32 for each innings.

India won the toss, batted first and reached 7-203 off 32 overs. Stylish Sachin Tendulkar, 18, made 81 off 71 balls.

Zimbabwe's best bowlers were off spinner John Traicos, with three for 35, and seamer Mark Burmester, 3-36.

Zimbabwe's captain, David Houghton, had a problem: go for early runs and risk losing wickets or gamble that the rain would stay away and pace the innings for 32 overs. He made the wrong choice: it poured.

When the match was called off after 19.1 overs his batsmen had made one for 104. Zimbabwe's 1-103 after 19 overs was pitted India's comparative total of 158.

On Tuesday India plays the West Indies in Wellington and Zimbabwe plays South Africa in Canberra.
