Part-time bowler Hansie Cronje wrecked India with career-best figures and then hit the winning six to give South Africa a thrilling six-wicket victory in the first day-night limited-overs international at Newlands.

The 23-year-old Cronje, whose best bowling in 11 previous internationals was 2-17 against Zimbabwe in the World Cup, claimed 5-32 as South Africa rode high in its first official one-day match at home.

A capacity crowd of more than 18,000 watched man-of-the-match Cronje pull Manoj Prabhakar over the mid-wicket fence for six to snatch a dramatic victory for the home team with three balls to spare.

The match appeared to be well in South Africa's grasp after India, electing to bat first on an easy-paced wicket, caved in dramatically to be bowled out for 184 off the final delivery of the innings.
But the home team made heavy weather of an asking rate of less than four an over despite a heroic 43 from captain Kepler Wessels and a solid 56 by veteran Peter Kirsten.

Indian batsmen surrendered meekly losing the last nine wickets for 81 runs after the new-look opening pair of Woorkeri Raman and Ajay Jadeja gave them a flying start of 92 by the 28th over.

Left-handed Raman justified his selection ahead of the off-form vice-captain Ravi Shastri with a classy 47 and the 21-year-old Jadeja made 48, but the remaining batsmen succumbed to the gentle medium-pace of Cronje.

South African openers Andrew Hudson (33) and Wessels prevented any early hiccups by putting on 56 for the first wicket in 20 overs.

Hudson was caught at mid-wicket off Sachin Tendulkar, who filled in the role of a fifth bowler well by restricting the batsmen to just 25 runs in his spell of 10 overs.

Kirsten went in the 48th over with 17 runs still needed for victory but Cronje and newcomer Dave Callaghan fought back the Indian challenge to bring South Africa victory.

South Africa needed eight in the final over and Cronje took two of the first ball, defended the second before striking the winning six off the third and racing back to the pavilion.
