South African captain Kepler Wessels has been accused, of hitting Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev with his bat during the day-night cricket international in Port Elizabeth.

If he is found guilty of assaulting another player, Wessels's position as South Africa's captain could be in jeopardy.

The alleged incident came shortly after Kapil, who was about to bowl, ran out Peter Kirsten when he backed up too far. Kirsten argued with the umpires and Indian players before reluctantly leaving the field.

Three balls later Wessels's bat appeared to collide with Kapil at the bowler's end as the South African captain turned for a second run.

Both Kirsten's and Wessels's actions are the subject of an investigation by Clive Lloyd, the match referee appointed by the International Cricket Council.

The investigation followed a complaint by the Indian manager, Amrit Mathu, who said,

"Kirsten showed dissent against the umpires and provoked the crowd by staying in the middle.

"Kepler was at fault in striking Kapil on the shin. These acts violate the ICC Code of Conduct. It is now for the referee to take action."

Former West Indies captain Lloyd can fine a player up to 75 per cent of his match fee and suspend him for up to three internationals in the seven-game series.

The Port Elizabeth match resulted in a six-wicket win for South Africa, giving it a 2-0 series lead.

Lloyd said the match had been "marred by on-the-field incidents" and the umpires had giv en him a report on "what was said" after the run-out.

The incidents occurred in the ninth over as South Africa chased India's meagre total of 147 all out in 49.4 overs.

Kapil ran out Kirsten before the first ball of the over was delivered and there was a consider- able delay in which words and gestures were exchanged before the batsman left.

Twice in the past 11 days, in the Johannesburg Test and the Cape Town day-night international, Kapil threatened to run out Kirsten as he backed up but did not do so.

Mike Proctor, the South African coach, said Kirsten "wasn't warned during this match".

"I don't believe the incident was in the spirit of cricket," he said. "He was backing up very gently."

Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin said, "We warned him two times, he can't just go on doing it.

Wessels would not comment. South Africa went on to victory at 4-148 with 20 balls to spare, Dave Callaghan top-scoring with 45 not out.

South African all-rounder Brian McMillan was man-of-the-match. He took four for 32, a catch and made one of three run-outs in what Lloyd described as a fielding performance as good as he had ever seen.
