Sri Lanka's first international cricket match at home in more than five years turned into a joyous celebration at the expense of Allan Border's Australians.

Starved of cricket since New Zealand's aborted 1987 tour the Sri Lankans pulled off a remarkable four-wicket victory with four balls to spare at the Sara Ground.

Chasing Australia's impressive 5-247, Sri Lanka's two most impressive batsmen, Aravinda de Silva and captain Arjuna Ranatunga, saw them home.

De Silva laid the foundations with a stunning knock of 105 from just 102 deliveries.

Coming to the wicket at 2-12, de Silva lashed 12 boundaries and two sixes in his second one-day hundred.

The Sri Lankan cause looked lost when Mark Waugh brilliantly ran out de Silva with the total at 202 but Border had not counted on Ranatunga.

In a stunning assault, Ranatunga took 20 runs from McDermott's ninth over- the 48th of the innings - to set up the victory. In that wild six deliveries, Ranatunga crashed two sixes including one outrageous shot straight over cover.

McDermott was pummelled for 64 runs from his 9.2 overs as Ranatunga finished unbeaten on 45.

Ranatunga's burst ruined the good work of Mike Whitney and spinner Greg Matthews who both bowled superbly. Whitney finished with 2-33 from his 10 overs while Matthews claimed 1-34.

Earlier, Australia's solid 5-247 was built around Mark Taylor's 94 run. contribution Taylor has rarely played one-day cricket for Australia in recent years but the newly ap pointed vice-captain shared a 109 run stand with fellow opener Tom Moody Moody's share was 54 runs, while Taylor fell six short of his century when he holed out to Hashan Tillekeratne at deep square leg off the bowling of Ruwan Kalpage.

Waugh and Border pushed Australia 10-wards a solid total, leaving Sri Lanka a target of 4.96 an over for victory.

Australia has never won a one-day game on the island after two losses and two washouts on the 1983 tour.

The Australians were unhappy when Ranatunga called for a runner in the 49th over after his assault on McDermott.

The portly Ranatunga was breath- ing heavily and several Australians felt he was not seriously injured.

The two sides meet again in the first Test tomorrow with the remaining two one-dayers to be played in three weeks.
