Australia's fading reputation as one-day cricket master was further tarnished when Sri Lanka secured an unbeatable 2-0 lead in their three-match series with a five-wicket victory at the Khettarama Stadium.
Led by a slashing 63 from former captain Aravinda de Silva, Sri Lanka cruised to 5-194 in 42.5 overs after rain reduced the target to 191 in 44 overs from Australia's original 7-216.
De Silva played to the crowd perfect- ly, just as he did with his century in the first one-dayer, by crashing boundaries with impunity and acknowledging the whistles calling for more.
The tiny right-hander scored his runs from just 61 deliveries to put Sri Lanka in an unassailable position going into the final match.
Sri Lanka began needing 4.34 an over for victory and openers Roshan Mahanama and Chandika Hathurusinghe provided a 71-run start for the first wicket.
De Silva was unfazed by the 25-min- ute rain interruption at 2-114 and carried on to his half-century in just over an hour, wrapping up victory with 1.1 overs to spare.
Led by Dean Jones, the Australians did well to reach 7-216 with Jones re- maining unbeaten on 59, while David Boon (35) and vice-captain Mark Taylor and captain Allan Border, each with 30, also provided impetus.
