The West Indies captain, Richie Richardson, is looking forward to a "cut-throat" clash with Australia next week after his side knocked Sri Lanka out of World Cup finals contention in Berri.

Their 91-run victory over the Sri Lankans gives the Windies eight points from seven World Cup matches but only a win over the Australians in Melbourne in a day-night match on Wednesday will ensure Richardson" men qualify for the semi-finals. It is the last round-robin match for both teams.

Richardson said last night that the match with Australia was a confrontation he had been savouring because the Australians had dominated recently in limited-over contests between the two countries, "They'll be playing against the West Indies and everybody wants to cut our throats," Richardson said.

"Regardless of the situation, we always like to beat Australia." The Windies posted a hefty 8-268 from 50 overs yesterday after. being sent in with the temperature at 38 C.

Trinidad's Phil Simmons starred with a one-day international career-best 110 off 125 balls to earn the man-of-the-match honour.

The Sri Lankans, who a week ago were sitting pretty in third place in the Cup standings, never made much of a challenge, batting out the 50 overs for 9-177 to at least keep the small, enthusiastic crowd of 2650 Riverland cricket lovers entertained.

The Sri Lankan captain, Aravinda De Silva, said, "We played badly the last three games and we deserved to lose today. We gave away far too many easy runs early on."

Simmons was dropped twice on 47. while Desmond Haynes (38) and Winston Benjamin (24 not out) were also given lives.

Simmons, 28, was only included in the side due to continuing concern over paceman Malcolm Marshall's injured ankle.

But he has given the Windies' selectors a lot to think about with a hard-hitting innings that included nine fours and two sixes.

The tall right-hander had his skull fractured by Gloucestershire and England paceman David Lawrence at Bristol during the 1988 Windies tour and spent several months recovering.

His century was the sixth in the Cup competition and beat his previous best one-day score of 104 not out against India at Trivandrum in India in January, 1988.

The West Indies manager. Deryck Murray, would not allow Simmons to be interviewed after game, Although the Windies built an imposing total, they struggled in the final stages after Simmons departed caught in the deep in the 40th over at 4-197.

Five wickets were lost for 31 runs in 35 balls with part-time medium pacer Chandika Hathurusinghe picking up three wickets in two overs at one stage.

But Curtly Ambrose and Benjamin combined for a 40-run ninth-wicket stand to post a healthy tally.

There was not much to write about Sri Lanka's innings, save for opener Athula Samarasekera's 40 off 41 balls.

Sri Lanka, which has had a terrible schedule crossing the Tasman and travelling to various places in Australia, must head to Perth from Berri today to prepare for Sunday's final clash with Pakistan.

"It's very, very unfair." De Silva said.
