Match-winning leg-spinner Shane Warne came out of his winter hibernation to resume normal service and bowl Australia to a stunning 28-run cricket victory against Pakistan at the SSC ground.

Warne, who had not bowled competitively in four months. relished his first contact with the Pakistanis to record figures of 3-29 from 10 overs, securing the win from a seemingly lost cause.

Australia struggled to 7-179 from its 50 overs on a green-tinged wicket and Pakistan looked to be making a formality of the result at 1-75 in reply after 21 overs.

Warne broke through in his second over and the world champions collapsed so badly they finished their 50 overs at 9-151.

Warne was brilliantly supported by Steve Waugh and Glenn McGrath, who dragged the run-rate back down from four per over to three with some outstanding bowling.

Waugh bagged a superlative 3-16 from 10 overs through the middle part of the innings while McGrath finished with 2-25 from his full quota.

Earlier in the day, Warne scored. a vital 30 to push Australia to a respectable total in conditions made for the pace pairing of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

Warne broke through in his second over, having Inzamam Ul Haq stumped by lan Healy for 29.

The leg-spinner then had Basit Ali caught and bowled for nought off one of the poorest deliveries he has ever bowled but the Pakistanis began to stumble.

Opener Saeed Anwar (46) and Inzamam were cruising along at 1-77 before Inzamam fell to Warne to start the decline.

Taylor spelled Warne after seven overs and showed how important he has now become by using him for the vital closing overs, including the 50th which Asif Mujtaba played out as a maiden.
