South Africa won the game but lost an opening batsman in a day of mixed fortunes in which it kept alive hopes of qualifying for next week's World Series cricket finals.

Peter Kirsten underwent plastic surgery late yesterday on his face after being struck by a ball from Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath.
South Africa, robbed of its leading run-scorer in the past two World Series matches, went on to an 82-run victory over Australia.

After compiling 7-208 from its 50 overs, the tourists routed the Australians, playing without captain Allan Border, for 126 in the 41st oves. The Australians lost 5-18 in the middle order.

Kirsten suffered two depressed fractures of his left cheekbone and another near his nose after a ball rose sharply off the lively WACA Ground wicket during the third over of the innings.

Kirsten, who was also hit in the helmet in the match against New Zealand here on Friday, was noticeably dazed after being hit.

The ball squeezed between the peak of his helmet and the protective metal grille.
The 38-year-old was carried from the ground on a stretcher and later taken to the Mount Hospital by ambulance.

South African manager Robbie Muzzell said that so far there were no plans to send Kirsten home. "We hope he can travel on to Melbourne."
