Dean Jones further pressed his claims for Australia's cricket tour of South Africa when he blazed a swashbuckling 82 in his team's 51-run win over New Zealand in the final World Series qualifying match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Australians will now play South Africa in the best-of-three finals after the Kiwis never seriously troubled the 218-run target the Australians had set.
Man-of-the-match Jones shared in two big partnerships to put Australia back on track after successive loses in the round-robin competition.
His Victorian team-mates also got into the act in front of their home crowd, bowlers Shane Warne (3-28), Damien Fleming (2-15) and Paul Reiffel (3-35) wrapping up the New Zealand innings for 166.
The Victorian skipper's international homecoming to the MCG after almost a year away was a typical hustling Jones knock as he hardly caught his breath in 177 minutes at the crease.
He compiled 120 runs with David Boon (65) after the early loss of Queens-lander Matthew Hayden, then put on 78 for the third wicket with Mark Waugh (45no) before holing out in the last over.
Jones, who has forged ahead of Western Australian batsman Damien Martyn as a South African tour aspirant, has made 98, 21, 10 and now 82 since his one-day recall.
New Zealand's renowned fighting qualities were not evident last night as it dropped behind in the run pursuit from the outset.
The Kiwis were 3-64 after the 25th over and set themselves a huge target entering the final 10 overs when they required about 12 runs an over.
Afterwards, New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford, whose side needed to win to qualify for the finals, said South Africa had probably deserved to be there ahead of the Kiwis.
Despite a stonewalling 43 from Kiwi opener Bryan Young and an enterprising 39 from all-rounder Chris Cairns late in the innings, New Zealand's batsmen were hopelessly outclassed.
