Opener Gary Kirsten's unbeaten 112 helped South Africa set a winning total of 231 in the first one-day cricket final against Australia at the MCG.

Kirsten, one of the success stories of the South African tour after being called in as an injury replacement in December, comfortably knocked up his maiden limited-overs century as the republic finished with 5-230 off its allotted 50 overs.

Australia could only make 202 in reply, with opener David Boon scoring 45 and captain Allan Border 42.

Border's worst fears of chasing a large total were realised when Gary and Peter Kirsten brought up their side's 50 in only 49 minutes.

The 53-run opening partnership was broken when Steve Waugh dismissed Peter Kirsten for 28 in the 16th over when he got a top edge to wicket-keeper Ian Healy.

But the runs continued to flow with Gary Kirsten sharing a 90-run stand with his skipper Hansie Cronje for the second wicket and then 53 with the busy Jonty Rhodes.

Fast bowler Glenn McGrath was banished from the attack after conceding 34 runs from six overs and Border also suffered, taking himself out after he was hit for 26 off four overs including 13 runs in the 34th over of the innings.

Leg-spinner Shane Warne failed to reach the earlier great heights of this summer and finished with 1-45 off his 10 overs, as well as putting down two catches.

He grassed a chance at first slip off McGrath's bowling in the second over when Peter Kirsten was five and then put Rhodes down off his own bowling when the South African was six.

His only joy came when Cronje (40) holed out to Dean Jones at deep mid-off off the third ball of his sixth over.

McGrath was brought back in the final overs and had better success when he removed Rhodes (31) caught behind in the 46th over and then Richard Snell (3) in the second-last over after the tail-enders gave Jones his second catch of the match. McGrath finished with the figures of 2-52 off nine overs.

Gary Kirsten did not give a chance during his 199-minute stay at the crease. His knock was the first century of the series after Dean Jones made 98 in Brisbane and his brother Peter Kirsten 97 at the same ground.

Since the second Test, the Western Province vice-captain has scored 51, 31, 55 and 112 not out last night. His 112 came off 137 balls and included eight boundaries.
