A brutal, unbeaten century from Robin Smith failed to stop Australia wrapping up the three-match one-day cricket series against England at Edgbaston.

Smith savaged the Australian attack to score 167 from only 163 deliveries but finished an undeserving loser as Allan Border's side clinically recorded a six-wicket victory for an unbeatable 2-0 lead going into the final match at Lord's on Monday.

Smith's fourth one-day century- the fifth-highest international one-day score included 17 boundaries and three sixes as he treated the be- wildered Australian attack with total contempt.
Viv Richards, of the West Indies, scored an unbeaten 189 against England in 1984 and also posted 181 against Sri Lanka in the 1987 World Cup.

Apart from the two scores to Richards, the only higher one-day innings were 175 not out by Pakistan's Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe and 171 not out by New Zealand's Glenn Turner against East Africa.

From lunch onwards, the 29-year-old lashed 116 from only 70 deliveries, to be the cornerstone of England's solid tally of 5-277 from its 55
overs.

In reply, the Australians were never hurried and reached 4-280 with nine balls to spare, thanks largely to Mark Waugh and captain Border.

Waugh contributed 113 and Border remained unbeaten on 86, his best one-day score in more than six years.

Waugh has now passed 50 in six of his past seven one-day innings since moving up the order in New Zealand and Australia never looked like losing during the 168-run stand he shared with Border.

Australia struck deep at England's psyche for the coming Test series by absorbing its best blow in the shape of Smith's amazing assault - with nary a problem.

Smith had the job of shoring up the England innings after a double breakthrough by Craig McDermott disposed of Graham Gooch and Alec Stewart.

The South African-born right-hander played himself in for an hour and a half prior to the lunch break, hitting four boundaries in his first half-century.

Once sated at the dinner table, he dined out on the Australian attack, taking 17 from one over by Merv Hughes and 20 in another by Paul Reiffel, including two sixes.

In the final 10 overs Smith personally scored 82 and reached a higher plane, in which it seemed as if any ball he faced could be hit for four or even six.

When Graham Thorpe was dismissed for 36, several of the Australians took the opportunity to congratulate Smith.

Only McDermott was immune from the treatment handed out, finishing with 3-29 from 11 overs.

McDermott beat Gooch twice in his first over and then bowled Stewart in his next to leave England 1-3.

McDermott had the excellent figures of 2-15 after his seven overs from the Pavilion End but he threw a scare into the Australian camp when he left the field at the end of his spell for treatment to his groin.

The 27-year-old briefly spoke to team physiotherapist Errol Alcott but returned and bowled out his full complement of II overs without any problems.
