England fast bowler Devon Malcolm narrowly escaped injury in a frightening incident that overshadowed the team's fine one-day victory over India in Jamshedpur.

Fast bowler Malcolm had a six-inch long metal bolt, sharpened at one end, flung at him like a spear by a member of the unruly 25,000 capacity crowd.

It missed him by just inches, flew past and embedded itself into the ground.

England officials and players were left sickened by such an act of senseless violence which could have hurt, or even blinded, Malcolm.

Seconds earlier, Malcolm had been struck by a shower of stones as he misfielded a ball on the boundary edge. England team manager Keith Fletcher condemned sections of the Jamshedpur crowd, which pelted both England and India players throughout the game.

And the action was stopped for 10 minutes during England's innings when India's Navjot Sidhu had to flee infield from a deluge of stones, fruit and metal scoreboard numbers thrown from one corner of the ground.

Fletcher also appealed to the Indian authorities to exercise far tougher crowd control, especially as the World Cup will be held there in three years time. "Someone will get seriously hurt before long. This sort of thing is getting beyond a joke out here," he said. "Today was unacceptable. There were rocks being thrown as well, which the crowd must bring in with them.

"It has got to the stage where fielders cannot go right back on to the rope for fear of injury, and the Indian authorities have got to get their act together."

An Indian official agreed afterwards that the Jamshedpur crowd's behaviour was unacceptable.

J. Y. Lele, the joint secretary of the Indian Cricket Board, said, "It was bad behaviour. I saw the bolt being thrown at Malcolm and I have spoken about it to the match referee, the umpires and to the local authorities.

"We are taking it very seriously and the next time there is a match here measures will be taken to stop this kind of thing.

"We will also be looking into making sure this sort of thing doesn't happen at the one-day international matches in Gwalior later this week."
